Welcome to The Clarinet Academy
Where clarinet players come to work hard, be inspired, and make beautiful music.
Why are lessons at the Northern Virginia Clarinet Academy unique?
Students learn proper clarinet techniques from day one to create efficient practicing skills
Perform in quarterly studio recitals to practice performing under pressure
Study all genres of music to diversify perspectives (Yes, the clarinet can play in jazz band!)
Practice sight reading and ear training exercises to improve pitch, which leads to audition success
Study music theory through scales tests to improve technique
Participate in monthly technique classes with other studio members, building communities within and outside their high school pyramid
PLUS, you’ll also get access to:
Semi-annual guest masterclasses
The Student Portal for practice resources and PDFs of The Academy Library to foster your student’s curiosity in their instrument, even outside of lessons
Are you ready to schedule a trial lesson? During a trial lesson:
-
Your student and I get to know each other to see if we are a good fit!
-
If this is their first time playing clarinet, we will learn how to make sound and play a few notes! Your student will also learn how to assemble and disassemble their instrument easily!
-
If your student is currently a clarinet player, I will assess their playing and we will experiment with a few new practice techniques!

Here’s what others have asked!
How do we know if lessons are the right fit??
The student/teacher relationship is so important in lessons. This is why I offer a free trial lesson for any new student! It gives us the opportunity to get to know one another, the basic goals your student has for lessons, and potentially try instruments if they are in the selection process! At the end of the trial lesson, you will be able to ask me questions and discuss a schedule for next lessons.
How often are lessons?
Lessons take place on a weekly basis! The Academy will be closed on major holidays and students have the options to skip that lesson or reschedule. During the summer I would work with families individually to ensure continuity of lessons while balancing a summer travel schedule.
My student is incredibly busy. I don’t know if we have time for this!
Just like any other activity, there is a time commitment with lessons. Every student is unique and lessons are structured to meet them where they will grow. Students may have lots of time one week to practice lesson material and less during a big tournament or exam week. Rest assured, your student will always leave their lessons having improved. Lessons are also a great way to help busy band students perform well in ensembles and in band playing exams.
What is your cancellation policy?
Generally, students are able to reschedule lessons for major academic or health reasons given the rescheduling is requested far enough in advance. However, emergencies happen and lessons can be rescheduled within 30 days of that lesson. Lessons canceled with less than 48 hours notice due to travel or event OR 24 hours notice due to illness are forfeited. If you would like a full copy of The Academy Contract, please contact me here!
